Choosing a Crib Bumper Pad

Crib bumpers pads contribute greatly to personalizing a baby’s bedroom but there is a fair amount of controversy about their being an essential element for the safety and comfort of your baby.

Some organizations are contending that bumpers pose certain hazards for baby, as do comforters and pillows. Organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics have spoken against the use of these pads, because they say that the pads can restrict a baby’s breathing if the bumper is up next to the baby’s nose or mouth. Many parents are looking at this kind of advice with a little skepticism and choose to use a bumper anyway. While cribs bars are now closer together a baby’s head can no longer get caught between bars but an arm or a leg still can.

You might still choose to use a baby crib bumper pad (and many parents do), to protect your child from hitting the bars of the crib accidentally during sleep, or to prevent the child from slipping an arm or a leg between two bars. It should, to be safe, be thick enough, and have a secure way of tying to the crib. There are variations in size, as some bumper do not cover the entire perimeter of the crib but only half.

Today you can find mesh crib bumper which are breathable, but usually do not cover the entire area of the crib. Breathable mesh bumper pads use velcro as a means of attach to the crib instead of ties, which is less dangerous to a baby. Just like they fabric counterpart they are machine washable.

It is however possible to find safer traditional crib bumper pads. You should select a pad that has ties no longer than 9 inches, 7 inches even preferred (or cut the ties that are too long). Your bumper pad should have no gap and no overlap to prevent a baby from becoming entangled in the padding. Insure that you choose a pad that is neither too thin, nor too thick or too soft. These last qualities are very subjective and parents will have their own idea of what is too thick or too thin.
